Sethule Development organisation’s goal is to promote economic empowerment of families through income-generating activities, capacity building, education skills training, environmental and mental awareness, identification documentation, amongst other cross cutting issues. In support of this goal, Sethule has established 5 pillars with programmes that pay attention to the rural community development.

Services/Activities

Orphans and Vulnerable Children Care

  • Birth certificate. Young child. Student.

    Birth Certificate Project

The birth certificate project came into existence after realisation that most children, especially in rural areas do not have birth certificates. The birth certificate project seeks to raise awareness on the importance of birth certificates and the required documentation needed for birth registration.

  • Feeding children. Young kids. Family.

    Supplementary Feeding

Access to healthy and nutritious meals is a basic human right. Sadly, many people struggle with hunger and malnutrition and food insecurity. In addition, climate change and economic instability has continued to worsen food insecurity in Zimbabwe. Sethule Development Organisation provides supplementary feeding to some families in Umguza and Matobo district to low income families and to children who are suffering from malnutrition.

  • Young girls. Sanitary pads. Personal care.

    Sanitary Pads Drive

Teenage girls in our areas of operation lack feminine care education. The project seeks to bridge the gap through provision of menstrual care workshops that include lessons on general hygiene and cleanliness to the girl child and providing menstrual hygiene products to the teenage girls in need. In some instances, girls resort to absenteeism at school, this in turn negatively affects their academic performance. This project helps create an environment that enables teenage girls to live happy and fulfilled lives.

Education Support

  • Uniformed children. Learning. Smart.

    Student's Learning Material

Education does not only help provide stability to the child’s life but gives them the tools to a better future. Sethule Development Organization (SDO) helps improve access and quality education by donating both textbooks and stationery in our areas of operation.

  • Classroom. Learning. Students with raised hands. Engagement.

    Scholarship Fund

Sethule Development Organization programme is designed to promote child empowerment through education. This is mainly achieved through assisting children within the districts of our operation, who otherwise might not be able to afford school fees but show great academic potential. They are assisted through finance for tuition fees, school uniforms and stationery hampers. We work with children, families, communities and government to advocate at local, national and international levels, for children to be afforded equally- quality education like other privileged children. For many children around the world, a loving home and good education remains nothing but a dream. At SDO we want every child to be able to enjoy being just a child and thrive in a safe environment.

  • Bicycle. Two students on bicycles.

    Bicycle Project

In most rural parts of Zimbabwe schools are far apart and children are forced to walk long distances to get to the nearest school. The issue of having to walk long distances to school every day greatly affects attendance rates, especially during winter and rainy seasons. It also largely promotes school drop outs. As such, Sethule Development Organization embarked on a bicycle project which makes effort to encourage children to attend school every day and to arrive at school early. The organization does this by loaning bicycles to children who walk more than 15km to school every day. These bicycles are serviced and passed on from one student to another after an intense selection and training process.

Youth Programme

  • Teaching a classroom. Engaged Students. School.

    Be The Change

Sethule Development Organization runs a school programme called ‘Be the Change’. It is a peer education programme targeting young people in secondary schools. The aim of the programme is to create morally upright future citizens; we believe that the information we share on facts about life will positively challenge the youth in their teenage years to be socially responsible individuals in curbing issues of teenage pregnancy, school dropout, drug and substance abuse as well as gender-based violence among other contemporary issues affecting the youth.

  • School classroom. Teaching children. Brighter future.

    REACT

Which is an acronym standing for Reject, Expose, All, Child, Trauma. This programme was introduced after realizing that most children are not forced but manipulated and tricked into sexual acts. Awareness raising through this programme empowers the children and enhances their capability to protect themselves by saying NO and exposing the abuser. REACT helps guard against gruesome effects of sexual abuse, creating a generation of healthy young stars who are the future of our country. It is a tool presented in a dramatic way to arm children with knowledge about child sexual abuse that might save them from being victimized. The aim is to create a safe environment free from harm and to offer access to interventions for abused children.

Psychosocial Support

  • Counceling children. Teacher and student. Communication and engagement.

    Child Safeguarding

In line with the Children’s Act, Chapter 5:06 of 2001, which provides the protection of children and maltreatment, Sethule Development Organization share a common understanding of upholding child safeguarding to prevent, protect and respond to child maltreatment. We ensure that all staff and volunteers at Sethule Development Organization adhere to all safeguarding protocols and hence we conduct a thorough background check and trainings prior working with children.

  • Students. Classroom. Engagement.

    Mental Health Awareness

A mental health illness is a physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in cognitive behaviour, energy or emotion that if left untreated can contribute medical expenses, poor performance at school or work and increased risks to suicide. Through this programme, Sethule Development Organization strives to improve mental health awareness and understanding of mental health in schools and in communities as a critical ingredient to improve mental health. Under this programme, we try to demystify misconceptions and reduce stigma around mental illness especially amongst youths in schools. The programme also offers one on one sessions to individual youths in schools who need counseling and when further assistance is needed, they are further referred to other relevant service providers.

  • Child counselling. One on one chat. Teacher and student.

    Child Centred Counselling

Since children experience adverse and traumatic events over which they have no control. Child Centered Counselling offers children one on one therapy sessions in a safe, secure and non-judgmental environment with a Sethule child safeguarding lead. These therapy sessions helps relieve a child’s emotional distress, provides the child with positive coping mechanisms as well as opportunities to survive after the trauma in order for them to eventually thrive.

Livelihood

  • Building and infrastructure, School building. Construction.

    Infrastructural development

Through conducting needs assessment, Sethule Development Organization identified the most pressing needs in most rural based schools. Sethule Development Organization noticed how children in these rural based communities often attend lessons under tree shades. Even though some schools have classrooms, they are dilapidated thereby making it unsafe for students by exposing them to harsh weather conditions. Under this sub-pillar, the organization focuses on constructing infrastructure such as classrooms so as to improve access to safe educational facilities.

  • Growing vegetables. Self sustainability. Crops.

    Self-help programme

Sethule development organization noticed that children and the elderly in rural based communities experience food shortages. Hence, under this sub-pillar, the organization promotes initiatives such as community gardening to improve food security and economic empowerment. The programme feeds school children hence helping vulnerable families manage to feed their children through the local garden that provides vegetables.

  • Water well. Water pump.

    Livelihood

Due to the far reaching levels of unemployment in Zimbabwe, people now rely on informal trading as a source of income. Sethule Development Organization, through its Livelihoods pillar, aims to restore and reinforce community and household capabilities by making sure that it provides assets, activities and capabilities that ensure that local people secure a sustainable means of living. Sethule Development Organization under this livelihoods pillar, helps children, women, youths and men to realize their capabilities through empowering them with skills such as sewing, baking, basket making and beadwork.
